Potential is the most expensive thing you can fall in love with. It's real — people do grow — but growth happens on their timeline, for their reasons, and never because a partner organized it.

Where character shows

  • How they talk about an ex who hurt them, and their own part in it.
  • How they treat servers, drivers, and anyone whose approval they don't need.
  • Whether they can be wrong out loud without collapsing or attacking.
  • What they do with a boundary you set that inconveniences them.

The question to hold

Not "could this person be a good partner?" but "is this person currently practicing the things a good partner does?" The first question has no wrong answer. The second one does, and it's the one worth asking.

Vetted's version of this

Character is why every Vetted member starts with an assessment rather than a photo, and why members can be vouched for by people who actually know them. It's an attempt to make demonstrated capacity visible earlier — read more on why we built Vetted or how trust works here.

Next principle: Community. Back to the framework.
