1. Name what you need in plain language
Not "I want someone kind." Kind how, and at what cost to them? Write three needs specific enough that a reasonable partner could either meet them or say no. Vagueness protects you from rejection and also from getting what you want.
2. Raise one small thing early
Most relationships don't end over the big betrayal; they end over a hundred unmentioned small things. Practice mentioning one within a week of noticing it, when it still costs almost nothing to say.
3. Learn your stress signature
Under pressure, do you pursue or withdraw? Both are normal. Not knowing which one you do is what makes conflict feel like it's happening to you. Track it for a month and it stops being a mystery.
4. Repair before you're asked
The single most transferable relationship skill is a clean, unprompted repair: name what you did, don't explain it away, say what you'll do differently. Practice it with friends and coworkers. It becomes automatic.
5. Choose by capacity, not potential
Ask what someone is demonstrating now, not what they could become with your help. This is the practice that shortens the wrong relationships — which is most of what "getting ready" actually buys you.
How to know it's working
Readiness rarely feels like confidence. It feels like faster clarity: you notice sooner, say it sooner, and leave sooner when you need to. If you want a checkable list, read signs you're ready for a healthy relationship. To apply this while dating, see the Intentional Dating Framework, or return to the readiness guide.
