People use "ready for a relationship" to mean wildly different things: financially stable, over an ex, done with therapy, finally feeling it. None of those are readiness. Some deeply lonely people meet all four. Some people in loving marriages met none of them when they started.

Here's the definition we work from: relationship readiness is your current capacity to build and sustain closeness with another person without abandoning yourself or overwhelming them.

Three myths it replaces

Myth 1: readiness is a feeling. Feelings tell you about the moment, not about your capacity. Anxiety before a first date is normal for people who are very ready. Calm can just as easily mean disengaged.

Myth 2: readiness is a life-stage checklist. Career, apartment, savings, clean bill of emotional health — none of these predict how you handle a partner who disappoints you on a Tuesday.

Myth 3: readiness is fixed. It moves. It moves with practice, and it moves with the relationship you're in. That's why we report a badge you can grow out of rather than a permanent type.

What it's actually made of

  • Self-knowledge. You can name your needs and your patterns without a fight forcing you to.
  • Repair skill. You can say "I got that wrong" before someone makes you.
  • Boundaried generosity. You give without keeping a ledger, and you stop when it costs you your health.
  • Discernment. You can leave something that's pleasant but wrong.

How to find out where you are

Reading about readiness rarely tells you your own answer — most of us grade ourselves generously in the abstract and harshly in the moment. The assessment asks about specific behaviors instead, which is why the result often surprises people.
